LANDMARK LEGENDS: Tagaytay

August 31, 2011 Mango Tours 0 Comments

Legends and myths are not just simple stories; they contain lessons and morals passed on from generation to generation. These tales may also include valuable historical facts and data about the culture and lifestyle of people or race involved.

A folktale on the origin of Tagaytay's name

Story:

Long time ago, in a small and simple village, there lived a good farmer and his family. The farmer’s family lived a happy and peaceful life until an incident happened one day. The farmer’s wife was attacked by wild boars while gathering some wood in the forest. The poor woman died leaving the farmer and his son grieving. Their lives suffered immensely after her death as their farm had been taken for granted. A month after her burial, the farmer and his son decided to take revenge. They hunted for wild boars to kill and eat them. Some were sold for them to earn a living.

One day, when the farmer and his son were said to be on a wild boar hunt, the animal they were chasing turned and attacked them. The father didn’t see the wild boar coming from behind. As the boar charged towards the old man, he fell on the ground and unknowingly dropped his bolo. Lying on the ground, he battled with the wild boar; throwing it in the air. As the wild beast recovered from its fall, the farmer immediately looked for his bolo; but to no avail. The son who got up safely in a coconut tree called his father’s attention and threw his bolo for his father to use. The farmer successfully got hold of the bolo. As the wild boar prepared to attack again, the son repeatedly cried, "taga itay!" The father charged his bolo with all his might; killing the wild boar in an instant. Meanwhile, the boy's repeated shout reverberated in the valleys of the ridge. Heard by the residents, hunters and wood gatherers, the cries became the subject of the conversation for several days among the people in the countryside. In time, the place where the shouts came from became known as TAGAYTAY.
