Philippines’ Best: Negros Occidental

December 26, 2012 Mango Tours 0 Comments

Mango Tours takes you to the region of Negros Occidental, one of the Philippines’ rich regions known for its many cultural sites, expansive sugarcane fields, sumptuous cuisines, and white-powdery sand beaches. Formerly known as Buglas, Negros Occidental is one of the six provinces of Western Visayas region. Its capital city Bacolod is the home to one of the biggest festivals of the country known as the Masskara Festival.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Negros Occidental is accessible by air, sea, or land travel. Air travel takes approximately one hour from Manila to Bacolod-Silay International Airport. It is the most convenient way to get to the region as sea travel takes 18 hours and land travel takes 24 hours.

WHAT TO VISIT:

Sta. Clara Chapel

Located in Bacolod City, the Sta. Clara Chapel showcases a mural-mosaic of a version of the Virgin Mary locally known as the Barangay Sang Birhen. This mosaic is made of over 94,000 pieces of polished shells boasting a beautiful, sacred art. Moreover, the images of the saints and Stations of the Cross, found inside the chapel, are also made of shells--approximately 30,000 pieces.

Sagay Marine Reserve and Cabin Reef

The Sagay Marine Reserve and Cabin Reef is among the most successful marine programs established in the Philippines. It is located in the town of Sagay, one of the major fishing areas in Negros Occidental. It has won various awards – one of which is the Gawad Galing Pook Awards for the Top Ten Innovative Program on Marine Conservation and Protection in 1997.

The Ruins

Built by a sugar baron named Don Mariano Ladesma Lacson, The Ruins was built to testify Don Mariano’s love to his beloved wife, Maria Braga. Nestled in a 440-hectare sugarcane land in Talisay City, The Ruins has become one of the popular tourist destinations in Negros Occidental.

Danjugan Island
If you are fond of nature and underwater activities, don’t miss the chance to visit the Danjugan Island. The island has a plethora of activities that you can enjoy such as Scuba Diving, snorkeling, kayaking, forest treks, and bird watching. The island is a home to five lagoons, mangrove forests, a bat cave,  rainforest, baby sharks, sea turtles, and rich and colorful coral reefs. It is a 30-minute boat ride from the Punta Bulata Resort in Cauayan, Negros Occidental.

WHAT TO TRY:
Chicken Inasal

The Chicken Inasal (Grilled Chicken) is an all-time favorite dish of the country made famous by the people of Bacolod. Its unique blend of spices and herbs like ginger and lemon grass distinguishes itself among other chicken cuisines. Grilled to perfection, everyone is encouraged to try this flavorful dish best eaten with garlic rice and sour soup.

Napoleones and Piaya

Sweets and other delicacies such as piaya and napoleones are two of Bacolod’s subtle confectioneries. Napoleones, which can only be found in Bacolod, is a must taste for every tourist who visits the City. This layered puff pastry has a delicate sweetness that can satisfy the cravings of your taste buds. Piaya on the other hand can be bought and seen in some of the corners of the Philippines but what they have in Bacolod are more delicious and addictive.

LANDMARK LEGENDS: Baguio

December 19, 2012 Mango Tours 0 Comments

Legends and myths are not just simple stories; they contain lessons and morals passed on from generation to generation. These tales may also include valuable historical facts and data about the culture and lifestyle of people or race involved.

A legend on the origin of Baguio's name

Story:
Before it was transformed into a hill station and became known as a top tourist destination, Baguio was home to the indigenous Ibaloi tribe of the Philippine Cordilleras. The Ibalois were industrious, kind and silent tribe of agriculturists.

These natives originally named this land as Kafagway, a word which means “wide open space”. This vast land was used by the Ibaloi tribe primarily for the grazing of their herds of cattle; mostly water buffaloes or simply carabaos. The terrain where carabaos pastured was composed of gently rolling hills with a lot of natural springs where the cattle used to cool themselves.

When the Americans came and reached Kafagway, the Ibaloi tribe were surprised. A general asked a native for the name of the place. Since the Ibalois can not understand the American language, the native who was asked was not able to answer.  It took him minutes to ponder what the American was talking about. Few minutes passed, the American general pointed to the ground and asked again. Unsure of what was being asked, the Ibaloi native gave the name of the mossy flowering plant that covered the ground. It was “bag-iw”. The Americans pronounced it as “bag-i-yo” which became popular and later on evolved into Baguio.

Meet the natives and rekindle this legend with this cool Tour Package Offer!
